Pergo’s origins begin at the world-renowned Perstorp AB in Sweden, which began manufacturing high quality decorative laminate in the early 1950’s. A pivotal acquisition in 1974 became the start of what would soon develop into a never before seen category in the flooring industry - Laminate flooring.
Perstorp AB acquires competitor AB Tilafabriken in nearby Trelleborg. This gives Perstorp a complete factory for producing bonded products, and the technology and ability to refine its own laminate into various end products such as countertops, windowsills, wall panels and more.
The Idé-77 committee at Perstorp comes up with the concept of laminate flooring during one of its brainstorming sessions; see “The Story of Laminate”.
Following successful trials and development, the first laminate flooring is finally put into production.
The first laminate flooring, Perstorp Golv GL80, is sold in Sweden.
Major marketing event proves highly successful and electrifies the Swedish flooring market.
To meet rapidly growing demand, a new modern facility for manufacturing laminate flooring is built and opened in Trelleborg, Sweden.
After a naming competition the brand name ‘Pergo’, an acronym of Perstorp Golv (Flooring), is introduced for the first time.
